Tip#3 - Various tunings to have fun with Back.................Next
Guitartips............Home

Now that you know how to tune your guitar, you have to decide what tuning you want to use.
Below I've listed some of my favorite tunings, and some others that you may like.

Standard Tuning:... E A D G B E

Open D Tuning:.... D A D F# A D ...........chord examples*

Open E Tuning: ....E B E G# B E

Open G Tuning: ....D G D G B D..............chord examples*

Open A Tuning: ....E A E A C# E

Drop D Tuning:.....D A D G B D

D minor Tuning: ....D A D F A D

Open C Tuning: ....C G C G C E

Also, there's a great tuning that's a variation of standard tuning, called "Nasville Tuning". This is
a little different, because you have to change the gauge of some strings. It got it's name after being
used on a lot of hits coming out of Nashville. (great detective work, huh?). I've heard of several
variations, but the one I like involves leaving the high E and B strings as is, and replacing the lower
four strings with lighter strings, and tuning them an octave higher than before. You can find pre-made
sets, or just buy the strings individually.
A typical meduim set, from low string to high string, would be: .030, .020, .014, .010, .015, .012
